Asteroids are not static in their orbits; they collide and interact in space. These high-velocity collisions can fragment larger asteroids, resulting in smaller fragments breaking away. The meteoroid’s descent into Earth’s atmosphere is marked by intense friction. As they plunge through the atmosphere at high velocities, the meteoroids heat up, creating the radiant streaks known as meteors. If a meteoroid survives its fiery journey and lands on Earth, it becomes a meteorite.
More than 60% of meteorites are found in Antarctica as its icy expanses provide an ideal environment for preserving meteorites, with their dark metallic or stony surfaces standing out against the pristine white snow.
